Caught Between A Traffic Jam And A Windmill Blade: A Renewable Energy Irony

Bringing The Old Into The New Age

The other day I was driving along I-10 in Houston TX.  It was a normal day which meant that the traffic was horrendous and, as usual, there was a slow-down for some unknown reason – probably construction.  I found myself sitting in traffic beside a huge flatbed tractor trailer hauling one massive blade.  You know; the kind of blades that are part of the humongous windmills that are out in the desert areas in Arizona, California and other places.  I’ve always loved the sight of these silent sentinels.  If you are lucky the massive blades will catch the sunlight just right and they look like twinkling stars when viewed from a very long distance.

I smiled at the irony of the situation I found myself in at that moment in time;  caught between the modern world with its trappings of traffic jams & dependence on fossil fuels and the glimmer of a different future – the windmills & renewable energy sources.

I’m a windmill person at heart.  I love them and they make me smile every time.  So years ago, when I first saw these magnificent huge ones I fell instantly in love with the rows upon rows of them in the California desert.  Since then, over 10 years later, you can find them scattered about the U.S. in various places, California no longer holds title to the exclusive domain of the giant windmill.

Even more exciting is that smaller versions can be obtained for your own home use!  Yes, it’s true!  Technology has advanced in the last decade and now affords us the opportunity to have our own windmill and it’s easier and less costly than one might think!

The Old Becoming New…

Windmills and wind power is not a new concept.  In fact, windmills themselves have been around for thousands of years – the earliest recorded date being in the 9th century.  How we interact with wind power is a new concept and with the addition of the newest technology, usage of wind power is sure to evolve even further.

Sustainable Living…

Sustainable living is a concept that involves not only harnessing re-usable energy sources for use but also sustaining ourselves by living in harmony with the environment.  There are many facets to sustainable living – energy harnessing and usage being only 1.  Yet, it is a step towards complete sustainability if that is one’s goal.

Wind Power and Sustainable Living…

Harnessing the wind and utilizing it for power is compatible with any sustainable living or off-grid venture.  Obviously if one lives in the middle of the city the choices are more limited as to what can be accomplished toward the goal of sustainability.  In rural areas or isolated areas the sky’s the limit and many who live in these areas not only want to have off-grid systems – it’s a must!

Places To Go & Windmills To See…

The good news is that the availability of power systems is now more attainable today than ever before.  One of the most popular resources for sustainable living power systems is located in the Northern Mountains of Arizona.  Mikes Windmill Shop  is a valuable resource for all things wind powered, big and small.

 A Move Towards Renewable Energy…

If, you’ve read this far down the article its probably safe to say that you are interested in sustainable living, renewable energy or both.  The truth is that everyone should be not only interested in this timely subject but motivated to make changes in lifestyles to accommodate this goal.  Renewable energy is forward thinking.  Renewable energy is Healthy Living.

Sometimes I think that windmills will stay with us forever. I do like them too eventhough I did not see them a lot in my life. But everytime I see them I always wonder if humanity will ever invent anything that will take windmills away from us. I hope not! :-)

I look at it this way – what do we want our kids’ lives to be like in the future? Personally, I think it would be responsible for us today to make sure that our future generations will be able to enjoy a prosperous life with many of the things we enjoy today. Focusing on renewable energy is a great example of this.

Exactly! Its nice to see that you can get a system small enough, yet powerful, to run your whole house, barn, sheds etc. If we all do our part then our great grandkids will have a better future.
